Hygrophila Purple
You will receive a bundle of freshly harvested Hygrophila "Purple" stems, packed to arrive healthy and ready to plant.
Hygrophila "Purple" is one of the most visually distinctive stem plants available for the planted aquarium. While red and pink stem plants are common, true purple coloration in aquatic plants is genuinely rare — and Hygrophila "Purple" delivers it in a big way. Its broad, lance-shaped leaves develop rich shades of violet, purple, and magenta depending on light intensity and nutrient availability, creating a bold, dramatic focal point that stands completely apart from anything else in the tank. It carries the same robust, fast-growing, forgiving character that makes the Hygrophila genus a staple of the hobby, making it as approachable as it is striking.
✦ What you're getting
Stems are available in bundles of 5, 10, or 15. All stems are grown emersed, arriving with developed roots that anchor quickly and transition to submersed growth with vigor. Expect new submersed leaf growth within 1–2 weeks of planting.
✦ Care at a glance
• Difficulty: Easy to moderate
• Lighting: Medium to high (purple and violet coloration intensifies significantly under stronger light)
• CO₂: Not required, but enhances color depth and growth rate
• Fertilizer: Benefits from regular liquid fert dosing and a nutrient-rich substrate; iron and micronutrient supplementation deepen coloration
• Temperature: 70–82°F (21–28°C)
• pH: 6.0–7.5
• Placement: Mid to background
✦ Color & performance notes
True purple coloration in aquarium plants is exceptionally rare, and Hygrophila "Purple" is one of the most accessible ways to achieve it. Under medium light it presents a deep olive-green with purple undertones; under high light the leaves shift decisively into vivid violet and magenta territory — a color that photographs beautifully and draws immediate attention in any layout. Consistent micronutrient and iron dosing is the biggest lever for deepening and sustaining the purple tones. Like most Hygrophila, it is a vigorous and forgiving grower that recovers quickly from trimming or fluctuating conditions.
✦ Growth & propagation
Hygrophila "Purple" is a fast, rewarding grower. Trim tops regularly to encourage bushy, lateral branching and prevent tall single stems. Cuttings root readily — simply press trimmed tops into the substrate and they will establish within days. Regular trimming keeps the planting full and dense from substrate to tip, maximizing the color impact of the grouping.
